A native of California, Ricardo relocated to South Carolina and began the Carolina Renegades in January of 2017.  He holds a USSF National B Coaching License, is a USSDA and WCDA sanctioned coach. He has over 15 years of coaching experience at every level from recreation to college coaching.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of soccer to the Lowcountry.

A major focus of Ricardo’s coaching career is assisting players in achieving the highest level of success in soccer.  From high school to college to professional careers, he strives to motivate and train players to reach their personal goals.  Over 12 players who have trained and played on his teams have been selected for the US National team for their age level.  He has sent countless players to college on scholarships, propelled numerous players to the MLS development programs, and has had several players sign professional contracts.

Ricardo also places great effort and emphasis on assisting players who would not normally have the opportunity or means to play club soccer.  He understands firsthand how opportunities such as college scholarships, staying active, being in a positive and nurturing environment can change a child’s life.  He works endlessly to find the funding need to provide opportunities for all children in the community.

In his down time, Ricardo enjoys, attending sporting events, travel, exploration and new adventures and spending time with family and friends.

Joe Montoya

Director of Coaching

Email: [email protected]

The Carolina Renegades are pleased to announce that Coach Joe Montoya will be joining the staff as their Director of Coaching in July 2018.  Coach Joe began his coaching career in 1989 and since that time has realized a great many accomplishments.  He brings a wealth of soccer coaching experience and knowledge to South Carolina.

Coach Joe holds both a United States Soccer Federation B License as well as an NSCAA National Youth Diploma.  He has coached at many levels from youth club to the Professional Development League (PDL).  He was an Olympic Development Program (ODP) assistant coach as well as United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) Regional Scout and Director.  Coach Joe has also coached at the High School level (Liberty High School, Bakersfield, CA) where he amassed three league championships in five years, one Regional Championship as well as being awarded coach of the year twice.

In his 25 plus years of coaching Joe has had the pleasure of seeing many players advance their playing careers in college while a few have had the opportunity to go on to play at the MLS Academy level, and professionally. Several of coach Joe’s former players have also gone on to become top level coaches at the club, college and United States Soccer Development Academy level.

When asked what was your greatest accomplishment?  “Although watching players further their playing careers in college and beyond has always been a great feeling for me personally, it does not compare to the relationships that I maintain today with players that are now married, have families and are professional career individuals.  Being invited to a wedding or being notified when the birth of a child takes place are among the greatest joys for me.  To know that I was able to have that much of an impact on a players life that they think of me during those special moments in their lives is a blessing.”

Coach Joe holds his Bachelors’ Degree from California State University, Bakersfield and is also a certified Paralegal.

We welcome coach Joe and is family to the Carolina Renegades family.  He will be a great asset to our coaching staff.
